Transform this affordable and generic ikea table into a gorgeous custom and colorful accent table for any room.
Mosaic tile coffee table diy.
This was a project to use up some mosaic tiles i had laying around and to bring new life into a tired mid century table.
I begin by covering the table top with pva glue and plain paper to help make the design process easier to plan.
I cover the top of the table with white paper and use pva glue to fix.
Again a nicer and more refined finish.
I love finding old vintage coffee tables in auctions and could instantly see the potential in this little piece.
We used a wooden table top and sanded grout.
Make sure to keep the trim flush with the outside of the table top.
It also helps tiles to adhere.
Next prepare the table top by sanding cleaning and sealing the surface.
I love to create functional pieces of art and seeing this old vintage coffee table where the broken glass top was removed and i saw underneath was plywood which is fine to lay tiles directly onto.
I just butted the flat edges of the wood trim together.
Then glue the tiles to the surface of the table working from the outside in as you recreate your design.
I 3 these tiles.
As pretty as it was it didn t suit my taste and wanted the table to have a glamorous personality and so the transformation begins.
Finish tile coffee table.
Fix the tiles with an adhesive.
Remove glass top i remove safely the top of table and clean the top ready for design.
Step 7 working with 1 sheet of tiles at a time place a dot of mosaic adhesive on the back of each tile.
I tried to sell it without success then i remembered this tiled kitchen table a friend of mine used to have and i thought something like it for a coffee table would be very charming and give a special touch to our living room.
My teenage son and i made a beautiful round mosaic tile table based on it.
I had this old ikea emhult dining table that was just wasting space and gathering dust here at home.
This gives me a clean base to see a design more clearly and the tiles then can be stuck straight on to the paper which also helps with adhesion grip.
The choice of colours and design is the tricky but fun part.
To make a mosaic table top smash your tiles into different shapes or buy premade pieces then arrange them into your desired design on a sheet of butcher paper.
If i had more time i would probably cut them with a 45 degree miter.
Pva glue edges i decide to use 10 mm black vitreous glass tiles that are all pre cut and can be laid directly.
